Here are some highlights from the first 126 years of University Baptist Church’s ministry in Columbus, Ohio:


1890
UBC founded at 10th Ave. and Highland Ave. as Tenth Avenue Baptist Church

1913
Bunker Memorial Scholarship established to support mission work in China

1919
Student house established in cooperation with the Ohio Baptist Convention (Francis Wayland Foundation) to increase ministry to the growing Ohio State University (OSU) community


1920s
Tradition of a welcoming fellowship dinner for students begins (continues today)

1930s

  • Ohio Baptist Convention discontinues student house support; UBC continues the work
  • Rev. Wylie institutes Sunday evening fireside hour where speakers from OSU campus addresses students in an informal discussion format

1940s

  • Mission work shifts away from China — Bunker Scholarship begins to support nursing programs at Central Philippines University and the medical college in Vellore, India
  • Growth in OSU population with returning WWII vets leads Ohio Baptist Convention to become involved in the work of the student house again — they appoint a student minister, a position that continues through much of the 1980s

 

1950s

  • UBC sponsors a refugee family from Latvia
  • Noted composer John Ness Beck serves as music director off and on from the 1950s through the 1970s
  • International Neighborhood Coffee Hour (INCH) begins as an outreach to international women in the community

1960

  • John Ness Beck composes “Canticle of Praise” in honor of UBC’s 70th anniversary
  • Ellen Rogers becomes the first female member of the board of trustees — she also serves on the pastoral search committee

1962
UBC resumes supervision of student house

1963
Rev. Carl Brown issues a call to civil rights engagement

1964
Tenth Avenue church building burns down

1967
Student civil rights fellowship members work as painters in Hough (Cleveland)

1968
Church moves into new building at current location and assumes name University Baptist Church

 

1978
UBC begins the School of Living program

1979
Hunger Task Force — UBC assists with creation of Neighborhood Services, Inc. (NSI)

1980s
Ministry of the Laity group supports Habitat for Humanity

1981
UBC sponsors a refugee from Poland

2011
UBC votes to join the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists (AWAB), an organization of mostly American Baptist churches that extend full membership to persons regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity

2012
Columbus Association of Baptists and Ohio Baptist Convention expel UBC for their support of LGBTQ rights

2013
UBC joins the American Baptist Churches of the Rochester-Genesee Region
